Matt’s Basement Workshop Guest Host: My first podcast!!

July 21st, 2008 · 6 Comments

A few months ago I started talking with Matt Vanderlist over at Matt’s Basement Workshop. Matt was taking the month of July off and he told his listners that anyone who wanted to do a show would be welcome. Well, the rest is history. Take a listen and let me know what you think. Matt is bugging me to do more or start my own show. What do you think? Am I rambling here or do I have something worth talking about?

Thanks again to Matt for this opportunity and for the great introduction.

    Hey Shannon,

Nice job on the podcast. You’re a natural!

You made me chuckle about the sharpening of turning tools. I bet once you sharpened them after a year of using them you had a real eye opener when you turned again! I can’t imagine going that long without a touch-up at the grinder – what a difference a sharp tool makes!

Again, nice work on the podcast.

    Mark,

You have no idea the difference once I sharpened them. I’m glad you get the point though. Too many people get caught up in the tool preparation and don’t do enough turning. It’s nice to have sharp tools, but no good if you have no idea how to use them. Thanks for stopping by. Still waiting for that guitar solo you promised me.

Woodturning is not my thing (a tradle lathe is, however, on my bucket list). but I enjoyed the podcast.

My only complaint is that there wasn’t (yet) a follow up. Keep it coming!

    Hi Shannon:

Very cool…………excellent intro to diving into turning. You hit it all. I’ve never ventured far from spindle turning ( face plate when needed) but I love seeing the bowls and containers that guys are turning out. Absolutely beautiful.

You touched on the tool, that just doesn’t get its day in the sunshine often.

    Nice podcast!!!!

    Shannon,

Nice job on the podcast! Matt may be in trouble.

I first got into turning about 7 years ago, and it can become very addicting. I enjoy turning because unlike furniture, things can happen fast. You can have a completed project in hours, not days.

I agree with what you said about sanding as well. It’s so much easier on the lathe that you find yourself sanding to grits that you’d never bring out on furniture.

    Keep up the good work.

Hey great job on your pod cast. I’m fixing up an old mark 5 shop smith I got for $ 50 just to use as a lathe. I have some experience turning in some shops I worked. but would like to do some on my own. I make Flutes so thats what I really want to explore turning.
