The clamping power this vise provides allows you to securely clamp it between dogs and to traverse a wide board (cut directly across the grain) without the slightest bit of movement. If they dogs were closer to the edge I would either have to have the board hang over the edge or clamp it only and the front edge of the board and might not get the same holding power. Right now I have just over 5 inches of space to the front of the bench. In short, I love this vise and it is my most valuable tool in the shop! I love the placement. It looks like you have it set back from the front a bit like The Schwarz does. I'm building my bench now and had been planning on locating it right at the front (ie. the second laminate) as Jameel suggests. Any thoughts on it now that you've been using it a while? I'm moving towards a more hand tool focused shop and will be needing a "real" bench that I can do work on. This may motivate me to tackle the project as well.
